Picture Day Panic
It’s that time of year again. The email comes home: “Picture Day is Thursday!” Suddenly everyone’s scrambling. As the dad handling a lot of the morning routine, I’ve learned some hard-earned lessons about making picture day go smoothly.
This is the no-fluff guide I wish I had years ago.
The Night Before Checklist
Do these things the evening before and morning becomes much easier:
Lay out the full outfit (including shoes and socks)
Iron or steam anything that needs it (wrinkles show up badly in photos)
Haircut if needed (at least a few days before so it doesn’t look too fresh)
Clean glasses thoroughly if your child wears them
Backup shirt ready in case of breakfast disasters
What Actually Photographs Well
Colors:
Solid colors usually look better than busy patterns
Navy, forest green, and soft grays work great for most skin tones
Avoid bright white (it washes out faces) and neon colors
Styles:
Collared shirts or nice polos for boys
Simple dresses or tops for girls
Nothing too trendy that might look dated quickly
Fit: Clothes should fit properly on picture day — not too big or too small.
The Dad Hair Strategy
Combing hair right before pictures often creates that “wet comb” look. Instead:
Style hair naturally in the morning
Use a small amount of lightweight product if needed
Let it settle for 10-15 minutes before pictures
Morning Timeline That Works
Wake up with extra buffer time
Breakfast first, then get dressed (protect the outfit with a towel or old shirt)
Final quick inspection and lint roll
Quick photo on your phone before leaving (just in case)
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Last-minute outfit changes causing stress
Dirty fingernails (they show up in close-ups)
Food on face (check before leaving the house)
Overly complicated outfits that cause discomfort
The Group Photo Reality
If your school does class photos, expect some chaos. Focus on your own kid looking decent. The group shot will be what it will be.
Post-Picture Survival
Keep a spare shirt in the car or backpack. Kids get messy at recess even on picture day.
Teaching Moments
Use picture day to teach:
Taking care of appearance for important events
Following instructions (sit still, smile, etc.)
That how you present yourself matters sometimes
My Go-To Picture Day Outfits
For Beckett: Nice polo or button-down with khakis
For Hallie: Simple dress or blouse with leggings
For Asher: Clean shirt with no big graphics
Keep it simple and classic.
The Bigger Perspective
School pictures aren’t about perfection. They’re about capturing a moment in time. Your kid doesn’t need to look like a catalog model. They just need to look like themselves — happy, healthy, and reasonably put-together.
Do your best, lower your expectations a bit, and remember to order a few extra prints. These photos become precious faster than you expect.
