The Stain Tier List System
After years of fighting stains as the primary laundry guy in a house with three kids, I’ve developed a tier list based on how likely I am to get them out completely.
This is battle-tested, not theoretical.
S-Tier: No Big Deal
These stains come out reliably with basic pre-treatment:
Fresh grass (enzyme spray + cold wash)
Most food spills (especially if treated quickly)
Dirt/mud (let dry, brush off, then wash)
Sweat (vinegar spray works wonders)
A-Tier: Manageable with Effort
Older grass stains (multiple treatments)
Chocolate (dish soap + enzyme)
Juice/punch (cold water + oxygen cleaner)
Blood (hydrogen peroxide — cold only)
B-Tier: Possible but Annoying
Crayon/marker (depends on type and fabric)
Paint (specific to type — acrylic is tough)
Set-in grease (needs heavy dish soap treatment)
Red dirt/clay (multiple washes)
C-Tier: Long Shot
Old set-in grass on light colors
Permanent marker
Dried paint
Mystery stains that have been through the dryer
F-Tier: Just Burn It
Silicone-based craft glue
Dried permanent marker on light fabrics
Multiple failed treatment attempts
Anything that’s been dried multiple times with the stain set

Real Household Examples
The infamous grass-stained soccer shorts that came out clean after immediate treatment vs the ones I missed that became permanent.
Asher’s marker art on his shirt — some came out, some became character-building battle scars.
Teaching the Kids
I’m starting to show Beckett and Hallie basic stain treatment. Understanding how to handle messes is a valuable life skill.
When to Accept Defeat
Some stains win. That’s okay. A few battle scars on clothes show a childhood well-lived. The goal is winning most of the battles, not all of them.
Final Tier List Advice
Focus your energy on S and A tier stains. They make up the majority of what you’ll deal with. For the lower tiers, quick treatment still helps, but don’t stress too much if they don’t come out perfectly.
Your kids are making memories, not keeping a clothing catalog.
